Why We Need the Feed?

Hi, my name is Julie, a new account manager with the RentMineOnline team, and I’m signing on here with my first blog. I joined RentMineOnline because I recognized an overwhelming trend of social media marketing in my daily life. We are connected to “the grid” more than ever before. Computers, phones and now even iPads create the infrastructure while companies like Facebook, Yelp and Twitter enable the voice of the consumer.

We spend so much time on these networking and recommendation sites because we like and rely upon the content. Was that an earthquake I just felt (you can relate if from SF)? Check Twitter. Missed the Superbowl party at Mike’s and want to see how it was? Check Facebook. We are coming to rely upon social networks for information flow. Every month (Jan 2011 figures), an average of 30 billion pieces of content (links, notes, photos) are shared on Facebook alone. People follow friends, products, causes and other groups to absorb this information. Businesses strive to gain market recognition from these users by trying to discover clever ways to engage consumers online with branded content and interactive advertising. Their goal is brand building, selling and expanding the reach of their product amongst friends. The main point here is the selling power of friendship, The Wall Street Journal did an interesting piece on this a while back, People want to connect with their peers, in turn, purchasing the same products or reading up on what their friends have posted on their social walls. Thus, social media can be used as a tool that makes creating a viral or buzz worthy campaign easier; cost effective, less time consuming, green and have a significantly larger social reach.

Old Spice utilized Twitter and Facebook successfully in turning one of their popular commercials into a hilarious and engaging marketing campaign. Wieden Kennedy, Old Spice’s “The Man Your Man Could Smell Like”, delivered personal videos responses in character to anyone who tweeted a question or comment about Old Spice. The debonair spokesman delivered almost 120 strategic video responses in 24 hours. Check out one of his videos below:

Everyone wanted in on the experience and tweeted about Old Spice in hopes of a personal response. This spurred global conversation and brand engagement and spread to the masses through massive amounts of re-tweets and blog based exposure.

Personalization, engagement and responsiveness are consistent themes found in the Old Spice campaign and any successful social media campaign. These themes can be integrated into the Multi Family Industry to modernize their current referral programs through social media.

What is a Social Media Referral?

Imagine a world where your residents invited all of their friends and family members into a huge room and you had the opportunity to market your community. Now imagine this same crowd, but instead of taking the stage by yourself, your residents joined you and boasted over a megaphone, “I love my community; you should come check it out!” Fortunately, this is no longer a fleeting dream but a burgeoning reality. New at RentMineOnline: Show off Your Resident Comments

We're excited to announce a new feature for our customers: RSS feeds for resident comments.

When we run a referral campaign, residents come through our site and let friends know how much they enjoy living at their respective communities. For a while now we have let clients see the comments sent from residents to their friends (anonymously of course, to preserve resident privacy), but we haven't given clients a good way to share those comments with others.

Frankly, we didn't know that clients would want to share those comments publicly. Fortunately, at RentMineOnline we devote a great deal of time to customer care. That includes helping clients understand our referral campaign process, following up to explain campaign results, and gathering feedback on how we can better leverage our technology. Referral technology is our main selling point, but a personal touch is our secret sauce.

And we're fortunate to get feedback from smart people. Apartment Marketing professionals are some of the most savvy users of new technology and social media. Mike Whaling (check out his turnsocial toolbar) and Eric Brown (read his blog for some innovative marketing ideas) are just two examples among many.

We were turned onto the idea of publishing resident comments by none other than the Apartment Nerd , Mark Juleen. He asked if he could have an RSS feed of comments left by residents, and we instantly knew he was on to something. Pretty soon we had other customers asking if they could use the (non-existent) feature, so we worked hard to make it a reality as quickly as possible.

Here's how it works:
  • Run a referral campaign with us.
  • Select resident comments that you want to display on your website or blog.
  • Grab a link to to your community RSS feed
  • Publish the comments using a RSS feed widget
We have an example using WidgetBox on the right sidebar, but we're happy to help if you need some instructions on getting your widget set up.

Referral Widget for Community Blogs

In response to requests from our customers, RentMineOnline is pleased to announce the launch of a new referral widget for blogs. Communities and property management companies can add this widget to their blogs by pasting in a simple piece of html code.

The widgets display :
  • the number of residents who have referred a community
  • the current reward for new referrals
  • a link taking residents to the RentMineOnline referral process
Using the RentMineOnline referral tool, residents can invite friends to their community using the social networks of their choice - including Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, and email.

This widget is provided to all companies and communities running resident referral campaigns through RentMineOnline.
